Why a local server when there is Google Drive? Because a 20 GB file takes an hour through the cloud and minutes on a local server. Network, server, backups and VPN installed and supported by one team.
Why would anyone need a local server? We use Google Drive or OneDrive anyway. The answer: when moving large files, server infrastructure pays off far better. In cloud systems like Google Drive you first have to upload a 20 GB file, which takes at least 20 to 30 minutes of your time. Then your colleague has to download that file, another 20 to 30 minutes. Getting a 20 GB file from one employee to another takes an hour. On a local server the same process is many times faster.

Frequently asked questions
Is a local server not outdated compared to the cloud?
For small files the cloud is fine. For large files, video, design projects and full control over data, a local server is faster and cheaper in the long run. Many offices use both.
